Google, Meta and Amazon launch a data protection authority
Google, Meta and Amazon announce the creation of a global Data Protection Authority in charge of defining and respecting high standards for the protection of personal data.
In a context where we are witnessing the formation of blocks at the global level which have divergent legislation on the protection of personal data, the three digital giants believe that personal data will be less and less protected. This makes it necessary, according to them, to create a union of democracies aimed at imposing standards of protection of personal data on countries like China or Russia.
Sundar Pichai said: "The information we have suggests that companies such as Byte Dance (publisher of Tik Tok), Vkontakte (the reference social network in Russia) are actively collaborating with the FSB and the Chinese MMS and have helped the government of these countries to "file" 75% of the planet's citizens. »
“These collaborations accelerated with the invasion of Ukraine: the FSB would use data feeds from Vkontakte and Telegram, to identify Ukrainians opposed to Russia and assign them an enmity index ranging from 1 to 20. But above all, the FSB would consider assigning a note to all the citizens of the planet by analyzing their positions on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on Western social networks. »
“Personal data stored on our platforms is currently being plundered by Russian intelligence bots. We must react and the States do not understand the extent of the threat: we are far from realizing it. The states do not help us protect the personal data we have collected. »
“So we had to react quickly. "
“That's why we decided to put aside our commercial rivalries to create a framework that makes the internet safe for its users.é
The creation of the CODS (Commission for Online Data Security) is the first part of this reaction.
CODS will have five missions
- Define a charter of user rights
- Define a conflict resolution mechanism based on the URDP model for domain names
- Provide Internet users and webmasters with tools that will allow them to prohibit access to their profiles or sites, to state filing devices.
- A state assistance service including the provision of an infrastructure for monitoring compliance with personal data protection policies
- A club to train Data Protection Officers from all over the world
We are going to deploy the CODS platform very quickly because it is urgent.
As of April 1, launch a service that will allow users to block Russian, Chinese, North Korean and Belarusian bots from accessing their social media profiles.
On May 1, an open source server side SDK based on kubernetes will be released to allow any webmaster to integrate a system for identifying and securing personal data at the heart of their site. This block saves data in the cloud for free in case of compromise and will deny access to Russian and Chinese bots.
On June 1, a PSP (Protect and Save Privacy) mobile application will be integrated into the updates of the iPhone OS and Android telephones and will make it possible to collect all the personal data of the telephone in a virtual safe in order to prevent any hacking of this data by platforms such as that of the Israeli company Pegasus, known to be used for espionage purposes by authoritarian regimes.
